Departmental Overview

The Department of Horticulture was established during 2001 in the defunct College of Agriculture, DG Khan. Later on, the college was merged into Ghazi University in 2014. Since then, the Department of Horticulture is working under the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. The department started B.Sc. (Hons.) degree program in 2001 and M.Sc. (Hons.) in 2014. Department offers B.Sc .(Hons.) and M.Sc. (Hons.) degrees in various disciplines of Horticulture. Students who fulfill the criteria are granted admission in B.Sc. (Hons.) and M. Sc. (Hons.) degrees programs. Degree programs are designed to be flexible in order to meet the student’s requirements in different areas of Horticulture and variety of courses are offered by the department viz. Floriculture, pomology, olericulture, plant tissue culture, medicinal plants and post-harvest science and technology. The Department has highly qualified and experienced faculty members. The faculty members completed various research projects in collaboration with different funding agencies. The main objectives of Department of Horticulture are:
  • To train human resource in the field of horticulture to meet the increasing challenges of food production, food safety and environmental protection
  • To arrange exhibitions and competitions for promotion of various aspects of Horticulture
  • To provide awareness among local people regarding growing and marketing of horticultural produce
  • To educate growers regarding postharvest management of fruits and vegetables for improvement of marketable crop.

Vision

Horticulture is a dynamic department, recognized internationally as a valuable and relevant resource in the plant sciences for students, producers, and the general public. We aim to advance and share the science of production and management of fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plants and their use in communities to improve social, environmental, and economic sustainability. Innovative basic, applied and cross disciplinary research will help to counter the current environmental and economic issues.

The Department of Horticulture is committed to education, and delivery to improve quality of life at the local, national, and international level. We enhance health, the environment, and the economy by advancing and sharing the science of production and use of food and ornamental plants.
