The Department of Plant Pathology at Ghazi University, Dera Ghazi Khan, was formally established in 2025 as an independent academic unit under the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences. Prior to this, Plant Pathology was a major discipline within the Department of Plant Protection, where the Plant Pathology degree program began in 2018 and the M.Sc. (Hons.) Plant Pathology program was initiated in 2021. With the increasing importance of food security, sustainable crop production, and protection of agricultural resources from emerging diseases, the creation of a separate Department of Plant Pathology reflects the University’s commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. Plant Pathology is an interdisciplinary science integrating botany, microbiology, crop science, soil science, ecology, genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and physiology. It focuses on the study of organisms and environmental factors that cause diseases in plants, the mechanisms of infection, and the development of strategies to prevent or manage diseases. The Department emphasizes both biotic causes of disease (fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, phytoplasmas, protozoa, and parasitic plants) and abiotic causes (nutrient deficiencies, pollutants, and adverse environmental conditions such as those responsible for Tirak disease of cotton and Khaira disease of rice). The major research domains of the Department include Mycology, Bacteriology, Virology, and Nematology, with applied focus on disease epidemiology, host-pathogen interactions, and integrated disease management. Students are trained to understand pathogen biology, plant resistance mechanisms, and modern diagnostic techniques including serological and molecular tools. For quality teaching and research, the Department is equipped with modern laboratories housing advanced microscopes, cameras, growth chambers, controlled temperature and humidity devices, and facilities for diseased specimen collection and preservation. A greenhouse, insect-free screen house, and experimental research fields are also available within the University premises to facilitate practical training and applied research. The Department of Plant Pathology at Ghazi University is committed to producing highly skilled graduates who can contribute to solving agricultural problems, advancing scientific knowledge, and ensuring sustainable crop protection. With its state-of-the-art facilities and experienced faculty, it aims to play a leading role in addressing the challenges of plant health in Pakistan and beyond.
